2009 'Little Warriors' Surf Camp

Children of wounded troops

FREEDOM IS NOT FREE is proud to announce that the 2009 'Little Warriors' Surf Camp for the children of wounded and fallen service members was a huge success!

We served 70 children from military families across the country, giving away a brand new INT surfboard to every child in attendance. The camp was free to the families who registered.

Here's what parents had to say about this year's camp:

“I can tell you that the camp has been over for about 2 weeks and it is still the topic of conversation in my household, my children's peer group and extracurricular events along with discussion with strangers surrounding questions like 'what have you girls done this summer.' They had an absolute BLAST and meeting other kids that can relate to their loss is undeniably valuable. (Freedom Is Not Free executive director) Jay Kopelman has a huge plate when it comes to seeking and helping families that are suffering with loss, the prospect of loss and the efforts of active duty families but he is up to the challenge. I have full confidence in Freedom Is Not Free and have taken every opportunity to share this event and previous conversations on direction and goals with Jay...I thank you, from the deepest part of my heart, for all of the time and attention you have offered my family. Big THANKS to Surf Diva for the instruction and the Shores Hotel for their participation in helping to sponsor this event.”   temery, parent Little Warriors Surf Camp participants

“My two children found the experience overwhelming and wonderful. The program offers them an opportunity we wouldn't have been able to provide otherwise. They also were excited to be recognized as special because they are military children. I plan to be involved as much as possible in the future.”   Veronica, parent of Little Warriors Surf Camp participants

CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR SURF CAMP CONTEST WINNER!

FREEDOM IS NOT FREE is pleased to announce the winner of this year's surf camp essay contest. David O'Flaherty, 10 years old, of Norfolk, Virginia, submitted the winning essay in this year's 'What Freedom Means to Me' contest. David his family were able to travel to San Diego, courtesy of the La Jolla Shores Hotel and FREEDOM IS NOT FREE, for a fun-filled four days seeing the best San Diego has to offer. Both David and his sister were campers at this year's camp. Congratulations, David, on a job well done!

“My son...and my daughter participated in the Little Warriors Surf Camp in La Jolla, CA. My husband has been deployed a lot and I haven't been the best "sports mom," but this camp built their confidence and they had FUN!!! It was a wonderful event and a great organization. I cannot thank them enough for everything.”   Page O'Flaherty, David's mom
